Jack Bogle passed away recently at age 89. The father of index funds and the founder and former chairman of fund-industry titan Vanguard Group, Jack Bogle passed away January 16 with many already writing his obituary.

Jack Bogle passed away with some investors saying that mutual fund shareholders may never again see a folk hero like John C. Bogle, the creator of the index fund

[My] thesis said mutual funds should be run in the most honest, efficient and economical way possible. You could argue that that’s the callow idealism of a 21-year-old senior in college. You could also argue that it’s the grand design for Vanguard

JACK BOGLE

Jack Bogle’s investment style was low-cost buying and a hold type of investor. Jack Bogle has been described as a populist in a business suit who spent six decades criticizing, challenging his fund-industry colleagues to give small investors what he called “a fair shake”.

As Jack Bogle passed away the veteran Wall Street investors will be remembered in the book “Investment Titans”. Jack Bogle was one of nine investing luminaries profiled in the book.

In April 2018, a little less than a year before Jack Bogle passed away, the legendary investor business magnet with a net worth of $80 million USD had recently taken to the stage to express his elevated volatility view about the current state of the market.

Jack Bogle’s elevated volatility view had been extrapolated over a longer time frame than most investors. The veteran investor had decades of investing under his belt and had lived through past volatility.

“I’ve seen two 50-percent declines, I’ve seen a 25-percent decline in one day and I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Jack Bogle in April of last year.

Jack Bogle’s elevated volatility view has indeed played out.

December has been the worse month for stocks since the Great Depression. Moreover, the first few weeks of January stocks rallied their strongest since the early 80s.
